EAST Durham bus services are getting a shake-up with the launch of 12 routes run by operator Go North East for Durham County Council.

The company won the £500,000 three-year contract to provide the services in and around the Peterlee area, which take to the road on Sunday (may31). The company says it is taking on 20 people to work on the contract.

The services will use vehicles with a distinctive yellow livery and an East Durham logo and all begin with the number 2.

Some of the new services incorporate old routes including the 145, 146 and 147 that operated in the Seaham area.

New fares on Go North East buses will let passengers travel for £2.50 a day anywhere in Peterlee or just £9.50 for a weekly ticket. Two new fare zones covering the area will also let passengers travel for just £1 anywhere in a single zone or £1.60 across both zones.

Go North East and the council will set up a stakeholder panel made up of local community representatives, councillors and company officials.

Go North East Managing Director Peter Huntley said: "We have given the East Durham services a thorough overhaul and, together with the council, have made sure our buses provide the quality services local people deserve.’’ Councillor Bob Young, council cabinet member for Environment and Leisure, said: "These initiatives reinforce our commitment to further improving public transport in East Durham.’’ Service details are available at www.simplygo.com or by calling 0845 60 60 260.
