WHITBY Abbey has been the inspiration for many great writers, including Dracula creator Bram Stoker and the 7th century poet Caedmon.

For budding writers in 2009, an English Heritage competition is looking for the best stories to be included in a book called "Whitby Abbey: Pure Inspiration", due to be published later this year.

Stories entered must include Whitby Abbey in a substantial form but can be of any genre.

There are four categories for entry- age 11 and under, ages 12-16 and 17-21 and over 21’s.

Closing date for entries is Friday, September 4.
