CHILDREN in Darlington are getting more outdoor play facilities. In the near future an extension to the South Park playground focuses on the space between it and the sports pitch. The existing playground, installed with a Heritage Lottery Grant in 2005, caters less for the under fives and more for robust juniors. It is very popular but too small.

The new playground on the south-western boundary is for infants, toddlers and children aged one to five. Planning permission is granted for an equipped play area, including fencing and gates. A spokesperson for the council said: “The self closing gates link the play area to the main park footpath.” The metal fenced enclosure is 1.2m high and ties in with the existing scheme. Rubber ground material will cushion small feet and allow surface water drainage.

Darlington Borough Council are encouraging sustainable transport. Three or four ‘Sheffield’ type cycle stands will be made available for cyclists, near the play area. These consist of three bars, two vertical and one horizontal, joined together at mid- height. They enable a bike frame to be fastened securely. It is anticipated that the cycle stands will be in place before the new playground is in use.

English Heritage has not raised any objections to the playground which is widely supported. One recently planted tree needs to be moved. This is not a difficult task and the process is unlikely to result in damage. Other than this there is no substantial adverse impact on the landscape or traditional features. South Park is a beautiful grade one historic park. It is enhanced by the addition of more recreational provision.
