TRIPS by the first steam locomotive to be built in 50 years will resume tomorrow - after engineers worked overnight to carry out repairs.

The £3m Tornado is one of the stars of the current steam gala on the North York Moors Railway but on Saturday night a problem developed in a firebox component.

Engineers in Loughborough made a replacement part which was taken back to the railway's depot in Grosmont, near Whitby, on Saturday where it was fitted.

Railway spokesman Phil Bustard said: "Tornado is with us until May 10 and will now be running as planned. She's been a big hit with the visitors.

"Visitor numbers have been pleasing and even without Tornado today, guests have enjoyed seeing such iconic engines as Sir Nigel Gresley and the Super D.

On Saturday Dorothy Mather, the widow of Arthur Peppercorn, the architect behind the design of the A1 Peppercorn class locomotive, attended the gala.

The 93-year-old is president of the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, which built Tornado, and she travelled from her Hutton Rudby home to ride the loco from Pickering to Grosmont and back.
