NORTH Yorkshire should have a new railway station in the next four years.

Funding has been won for a new commuter station at Haxby on the outskirts of York.

The Regional Transport Board has announced it will give £7.4m to City of York Council for the project.

The money will be used to create a new station and improve the existing track, with the new station expected to open in January 2013.

The campaign to create a station which would provide access to York, Malton, Scarborough and Leeds has been under way since 1989.

It will serve a catchment area of 23,000 people and provide a service for hundreds of commuters who work in York and Leeds.

It is thought 83,000 road journeys could be saved every year because passengers could use a train in Haxby rather than driving to York station.

The new station is expected to be created next to the original platform, which closed many years ago, and would be complete with a shop and ticketing facilities.
