A LOCOMOTIVE made famous by 1968 television series The Railway Children will be repainted in Shildon.

Work starts on Monday, January 12 at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum to transform the Great Northern Railways saddle tank engine back to its original apple-green livery.

Visitors to the museum can watch the project unfold from a ramp overlooking the museum’s workshops.

Museum manager George Muirhead said: "We are very pleased to be able to do the work at this museum.

"It is a really prestige project for us, and it makes very good use of our workshop facilities."

No 1247, nicknamed ‘Old Lady’, is the last remaining locomotive from a batch of 25 built by Sharp Stewart of Glasgow in 1899, and has been located at the museum in Shildon since 2005.

The repaint, funded by the Friends of the National Railway Museum, is expected to take between six to eight weeks.
