TWO men escaped serious injury when their car and van collided on a County Durham road yesterday afternoon.

Fire crews were called to the scene on Inkerman Road, near Tow Law, just after 2pm where one vehicle skidded on ice and collided with the other.

One man was found to be suffering from mild shock and another was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of North Durham with minor injuries.

Steve Wharton, a station manager with Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue, warned motorists to take care.

“People really must be aware of road conditions in this weather and adjust their driving accordingly,” he said.

“If it is icy slow down - it is better to get there late than not to get there at all.”
