Saddling up for a Boxing Day tradition

HUNTERS and their hounds took to the countryside for the traditional Boxing Day meet.

The Countryside Alliance estimates more than 300 hunts took place in the UK yesterday – almost four years after a Government ban on hunting with hounds About 70 riders met for mulled wine at the Queen’s Head, in Lanchester, County Durham, before trail-hunting in the surrounding area with 33 hounds.

Alan Chapman, master of the hunt, said: “We had a very good turnout in Lanchester and a very good turnout from locals as well, and we’ve had a lovely day out.

“Every day in the countryside is a lovely day. The weather’s been very kind.”

In Northallerton, North Yorkshire, 400 people watched the Hurworth Hunt gather in the High Street, outside the Golden Lion pub.

Hunt secretary Ken Fox said that although riders were hoping for a change in the law, using a trail was just as much fun.

“It’s all about keeping a valuable tradition alive until the law changes,” he said.

“It is such a social activity, and that is a big part of its appeal, and, of course, the horses and the hounds have a wonderful time too.”

About 70 riders with the South Durham Hunt set out from The Talbot Inn in Bishopton, near Darlington, yesterday.

Hundreds of supporters watched them depart for Redmarshall, Carlton and the surrounding area at 11am with 34 hounds.

Joint master Judy Shield said: “It has been a very successful day and we are pleased to have been so well supported.”

The Hunting Act outlawed hunting with hounds in 2005, but the Countryside Alliance says a 7,700-name petition for a repeal has growing support.

Most hunts use artificial scents and dead foxes to reward dogs, but anti-hunt campaigners say that some exploit loopholes in the law.

The Act has a number of exemptions, including the use of birds of prey and two dogs flushing out quarries.

Pro-hunt campaigners maintain the Act is illogical and does nothing to protect wild animals from unnecessary suffering, however opposition to their cause remains fierce.

Douglas Batchelor, chief executive of the League Against Cruel Sports, said: “If hunts are hunting legally, as they claim to be, and attracting record support, why on earth do they want a repeal of the Hunting Act?”

I accuse the author of this article of being biased towards hunting. The Northern Echo has a long tradition of impartiality, and Mr Barron would do well to examine this article, and consider if this tradition is being compromised.

I read with interest the 'trail hunting' intention??? of the Braes of Derwent on Boxing Day. Of course, all hunts are stating their intention to hunt within the law. However, I wish a Northern Echo reporter had been standing beside me in a field on Boxing Day and he/she would have seen a beautiful fox chased out of thick gorse which ran straight towards me then veered into more gorse bushes. It must have thought everyone was against it that day. I wish it could have known that I am one of the majority who want to protect it. 62 riders verse 1 small mammal no larger than a dog. the huntsman himself told me the fox had run into Stockerly Burn. I neither saw nor heard any attempt to call off the hounds. no doubt they will return on another 'trail hunt'. Next time, I hope I can be accompanied by a reporter.

You need to acquaint yourself with the facts Nick.
Hunting was banned because of the abuse and cruelty involved in chasing wild animals to their death. Its nothing to do with class either .. its about cruelty. You are obviously unaware of the principles of draghunting which means an artificial scent is used and the trail is laid across 'safe'areas. What hunts say they're doing is trail hunting yet continuing to lay a fox based scent in areas where foxes are known to live.Do you think it wise (or true) that these 'artificial' scents are laid across roads, railway lines, nature reserves, through gorse and bramble cover which would be difficult if not impossible to gain access. Come on ... no-one beleives their intention to trail hunt. Hounds have to be trained to follow a fox scent. Conversely, they can be trained to follow an artificial one. Hunters have always boasted of their ability to 'control' their hounds, yet seem to lose their control when hounds are chasing a fox! Monitors have been and will continue to film suspicious or illegal activity with a view to prosecution. The Labour Government have kept their promise ... we have better legislation for animals including our wildlife. I hope people remember this at election time and vote in favour of animal welfare by voting Labour. Lets not forget Mr.Cameron's promise of a free vote to repeal the act should he gain the keys to No. 10. Here's a man who wants a RETURN TO CRUELTY After all, foxhunting is one of is pastimes having ridden severall times with the Heythrop Hunt.

Many people don't realise the sheer barbarity of hunting with hounds, also the associated violence directed at anyone who attempts to document it. Indeed, hunting is steeped in violence and thuggery. That this is called a 'sport' is beyond words.
Hunts could engage in REAL drag hunting, there are plenty of such real drag hunts which use an artificial scent and do not chase and kill wild animals by 'accident'.

what rubbish you talk nick .. appeasement my foot! Whichever party promotes animal welfare gets my vote (and the vote of thousands of others I may add) whether its the tories, greens or lib dems. A nation is judged by the way it treats its animals ... which is the way it should be. Who cares about the many cruel people on this planet. With people like you about, its no wonder we prefer animals. By the way, try improving your spelling. Your ignorance is showing (in more ways than one). The only violence at hunts is created by those on horseback and oh I nearly forgot, by the recreational sadists with their terriers and spades. Now what are they doing at a draghunt???
And if you're so bothered to mention the puppy farms and more power to the RSPCA, then what are you doing about it? Nothing I suspect. I rest my case.
