A MISSING 81-year-old man has been airlifted to hospital with a head injury after going missing for 20 hours.

The elderly man from the Stanhope area of County Durham was last seen just after lunch on Thursday.

Overnight, 19 members of the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team worked with three mountain rescue search dogs, police officers and police air support to search areas to the north of the town.

He was found in Crook a short time ago.

Team spokesman Steve Owers said: "We asked for assistance from all of the North-East Mountain Rescue Teams so we could cover the extensive fell and quarry areas close to Stanhope".
