FANS of Newcastle United are planning a weekend of celebrations in honour of Sir Bobby Robson over the Christmas period.

The festivities paying tribute to Sir Bobby will be held on December 27 and 28, culminating on the Sunday as the Magpies take on Liverpool.

The theme has been dubbed “Merry Christmas Sir Bobby: Honouring a very special man” and is expected to transform Newcastle city centre.

Sir Bobby said: “Well I’m touched – it’s a kind thought.”

The celebration is being organised by Newcastle United Supporters Club (NUSC), which wants to create a carnival atmosphere, and deck out the city in the club’s black and white colours.

Supporters club chairman Malcolm Shiels said: “He is one of the most recognisable and popular figures in English football history. With Christmas approaching we can think of no better time for the club, the fans and the city of Newcastle, if not the whole of England to come together in one united voice and say: “Merry Christmas Sir Bobby Robson”.

The fans want pubs and bars to embrace the idea and display posters wishing Sir Bobby a Merry Christmas, and join in fundraising for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation with collection buckets and fancy dress.

NUSC is organising a flat bed truck with musicians driving around the city with artists performing outside the Gallowgate and Leazes end of St James’ Park.

Fans are being encouraged to bring banners and flags with messages of support for Sir Bobby.

NUSC is also looking into the possibility of making a commemorative presentation to Sir Bobby on the pitch at half time during the Liverpool game.

It is urging members of the public to get involved with the festivities.

Sir Bobby, 75, is fighting cancer for the fifth time.

He launched the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation this year and has raised more than £1m to create a treatment centre in the North-East and fund trials to find a cure.

Mr Shiels added: “If we all do a little, together we can achieve a lot and show Sir Bobby just what he means to the people of Newcastle and England. Let’s make this a Christmas to remember and show Sir Bobby, if he didn’t know it already, that he really has led a wonderful life.”
