SEVERE gales are set to lash the region this evening, weather forecasters warned today.
The relative tranquility of the last week will give way to strong winds with gusts of 50 mph or more from lunchtime.
A Met Office spokesman said the North-East and Scotland would be worst affected.
The storm will be at its height early evening and drivers on their way home from work are warned to be careful.
Saturday should be a calmer day before gales return on Sunday.
