GARDENING enthusiasts are being asked to help cultivate some community spirit in an east Durham Village.

The Horden in Bloom group, dedicated to making the area a brighter and tidier place, is appealing for residents to join its management committee.

Volunteers help run the organisation and take a leading role in carrying out a range of practical projects.

Karen Hyrons, project manager said: “We’d like to hear from anyone who has an interest in horticulture, wants to help regenerate the area or has gardening skills they can pass on.

“Committee skills would be an advantage, but really we would like to hear from anyone of any age who is interested in getting involved.’’ The Horden in Bloom project began in 2004, when community workers organised two special days of action in preparation for visits by Northumbria in Bloom judging panel.

Three years later, the village received four separate awards from the judging panel, thanks to the efforts of Horden in Bloom members and the parish council.

Earlier this year, the group adopted its own constitution and became and independent body run by volunteers with the support of local community workers.

“The group has done very well over the past few years, but it really needs to move forward now as a community venture.’’ Karen added: “It is therefore very important that residents are willing to take on responsibility for it.’’ Volunteers are asked to attend one monthly meeting and anyone interested should contact Billy Hill on 0191 5869909.
