A campaign to help reduce the amount of food wasted over Christmas has won the backing of district councillors.
Hambleton District Council is promoting the web-based "Love Food, Hate Waste" Christmas dinner portion calculator.
Each year in Britain a third of all food shopping is thrown away – with Christmas a big factor in that statistic.
The calculator helps householders work out exactly how much is needed – be it sprouts, roast potatoes or turkey.
Recycling officer Jennifer Lowes said: "One in three bagfuls of shopping we buy at the supermarkets gets sent to landfill.
"That’s on average £600 a year for each household.
"We throw it away because we cook too much or we let it go off either completely unopened or not finished.
"This calculator can help prevent some of the waste over Christmas."
