A COUNCIL’S environment officer is inviting people on a five-mile walk to escape the hustle and bustle of Christmas. Steve Cooper, Great Aycliffe Town Council’s environmental officer, will lead the walk along the Great Aycliffe Way.

Created in 1998, to commemorate 50 years since Newton Aycliffe was built, the route traces the edge of the town travelling through tranquil woods.

Mr Cooper said: "Many people do not realise how much natural green space Aycliffe has to offer, the Great Aycliffe Way is an ideal introduction to the countryside of the town, it incorporates several woodlands, Woodham Burn with its Wellingtonia trees and an impressive sculpture trail.

"The entire route is surfaced so we will not have any problems with muddy conditions after the recent wet weather and it is almost entirely traffic free.

"I can’t think of a much better way to escape the stress of Christmas."

The free event starts from Stephenson Way, opposite Stephenson Way School, in the town at 9am on Sunday (21 DEC). For more information call 01325-300700.
