Some of the best castles to visit in the North East for 2024
Durham Castle
Location: Durham, DH1 3RW
The history of Durham Castle begins almost 1000 years ago - the Durham University website explains: “Building began, under the orders of William the Conqueror in 1072, by Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria prior to being handed over to Walcher, Bishop of Durham.
"Durham Castle remained in the hands of successive Bishops for almost 750 years. During that time, the Castle has been the backdrop to rebellions, civil wars, political upheaval, plagues, famines, and religious reforms, and yet the Castle itself has never been taken by force.”
But now you can see inside the historical walls for yourself, from guided tours to online exhibitions.
Plus, on April 10, there are various events taking place for World Heritage Day including a Norman re-enactment by Vanguard Norman soldiers, art sessions to make Peace Doves (as part of artist Peter Walker’s new installation) and a tour of herbs and plants by a medieval monk.
You can even meet actor David Napthine recreating the life and times of 18th-century Durham astronomer, mathematician, instrument maker, architect and garden designer Thomas Wright.
