Groundworks are set to begin to pave the way for a long-awaited new hotel due to be built in Redcar.

Redcar and Cleveland Council contracted a firm earlier this year to remediate the land on which the 42-bedroom hotel will be sited, work which will start next week.

Meanwhile, the council expects construction of the hotel to get underway over the summer.

It is being erected on the former Rkade skate park facility off Majuba Road, which was previously demolished.

North-East based Inn Collection Group, which operates 31 pubs and hotels, has been brought on board for the £6m project, the capital costs of which are being funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority combined with a contribution from the Government’s Towns Fund.

Up to 50 new jobs could result once the hotel is up and running.

It will have rooms over four floors, a family restaurant and outdoor eating terrace, along with associated car parking.

In 2022 Sean Donkin, the managing director of the Inn Collection Group, speaking after a £300m deal overseen by private equity firm Kings Park Capital which saw the chain change hands, said it operated “outstanding sites where our customers can eat, drink, sleep and explore from in exceptional locations – with a cracking team of people at all levels”.

Councillor Lynn Pallister, the cabinet member for growth and enterprise, said: “Remediation works to prepare the site will be starting Monday 25 March making way for a 42-bedroom hotel and family restaurant. 

“Once these works are complete, the plan is for the Inn Collection Group to begin developing the hotel.”

Cllr Pallister added: “Coatham seafront has received a complete make over this past year, with leisure facilities on the seafront boosting tourism in the area, and we’ll soon be welcoming a big hotel chain to complement this. 

“The Coatham area is close to Redcar’s town centre, train station and the UK’s largest industrial zone Teesworks, so the hotel will be in a great location.”

New additions include a coastal activity hub with a range of indoor and outdoor multi-use spaces, public toilet facilities, showers, lockers, an equipment store, changing facilities and parking with an accompanying catering offer.

An 18-hole adventure golf course – ‘Frosty Penguin’s Putting Adventure’ – opened last year and a 100 space car park has been built on the former Coatham Bowl site.

Redcar and Cleveland Council previously drew up a masterplan for Coatham, aiming to regenerate the seafront along Majuba Road.
