Work is set to begin next month to revamp a popular play area in South Park, Darlington.

Visitors can expect new multi-play toddler equipment to be installed and a new piece of bespoke equipment for juniors in the middle of the area.

Darlington Borough Council hopes that the new equipment will encourage children to climb, balance, swing and crawl.

It was last refurbished back in 2005 and the latest revamp follows a consultation with with park visitors.

The work is set to begin on April 15 and the park will close for two weeks while the work takes place.

A Darlington Borough Council spokesperson said: "Work will start next month to revamp the play area in South Park.

"New multi-play toddler equipment will be installed and a bespoke junior play unit will run through the middle of the play area. This new equipment will encourage children to climb, balance, swing, slide, rock and crawl.

"A double basket swing, inclusive roundabout and a two-metre high, stainless steel slide will also be added. The play area ground surface will also be overlaid and repaired.

"The play area was last refurbished in 2005 and the latest revamp follows a consultation with park users last year. We have also worked closely with South Park Foundation, and elected members, to design the new play area,

"The work is scheduled to start on Monday 15 April and the play area will be closed for two weeks while it is carried out.
