Numerous fare dodgers have been fined over £3k in court this week after failing to buy a ticket for rail fares across the region.

The following cases were heard at Teesside Magistrates' Court

Leia Scott, 24, from 69 Strauss Road, Middlesbrough, was found guilty of travelling on a railway without having previously paid the fare of £7.70 with intent to avoid payment on August 1, 2023.

Scott, who was not present at the hearing, was fined £220 and ordered to pay compensation of £7.7, a surcharge to fund victim services of £88 and prosecution costs of £150.

She was also issued a collection order and was instructed to pay by April 5, 2024.

Sharday Smoth, 24, of Ferens Terrace, Shildon, pleaded guilty to travelling on a railway without having previously paid the fare of £5.30 on September 3, 2023.

Smoth, who was not present at the hearing, was fined £40 and ordered to pay compensation of £5.3, a surcharge to fund victim services of £16 and prosecution costs of £150.

She was also issued a collection order and was given the option to pay in monthly instalments of £20 commencing on April 5, 2024.

Tala Je Sowerby, 23, of Ferens Terrace, Shildon, pleaded guilty to travelling on a railway without having previously paid the fare of £5.30 on September 3, 2023.

Sowerby, who was not present at the hearing, was fined £40 and ordered to pay compensation of £5.3, a surcharge to fund victim services of £16 and prosecution costs of £150.

He was also issued a collection order and was instructed to pay by April 5, 2024.

Ian Thayne, 53, Garden Terrace, Consett, was found guilty on March 15, 2024 of travelling on a railway without having previously paid the fare of £5.90 on September 5, 2023.

Thayne, who was not present at the hearing, was fined £220 and ordered to pay compensation of £5.9, a surcharge to fund victim services of £88 and prosecution costs of £150.

He was also issued a collection order and was instructed to pay by April 5, 2024. 

Darral Anthon Henry, 41 of Tilney Gardens, London, was found guilty on March 15, 2024, of travelling on a railway without having previously paid the fare of £6.60 on August 29, 2023.

Mr Henry, who was not present at the hearing, was fined £220 and ordered to pay compensation of £6.60, a surcharge to fund victim services of £88 and prosecution costs of £150.

He was also issued a collection order and was instructed to pay by April 5, 2024.

Poppy Dunn, 28 of Willow Close, Morpeth, NE61 1XG was found guilty on March 15, 2024, of travelling on a railway, without having previously paid the fare of £6.60 on August 29, 2023.

Miss Dunn, who was not present at the hearing, was fined £220 and ordered to pay compensation of £6.6, a surcharge to fund victim services of £88 and prosecution costs of £150.

She was also issued a collection order and was instructed to pay by April 5, 2024.
