Flood alerts are in place across the region this evening after a day of heavy rain.

Residents in North Yorkshire are being warned flooding is expected in one area while other areas are being told rising waters could cause flooding near them.

The warnings is in place for town centre areas including Alverton Lane, High Street (B1333), Friarage Street, East Road and The Friarage Hospital.

The Environment Agency said: “We will continue to work with emergency services and local authorities to closely monitor the situation. Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses, and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.”

Flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible and residents should be prepared, are also in place in some areas.

The River Gaunless around St Helen Auckland, County Durham could break its banks.

Meanwhile the Lower River Tees and its estuarine tributaries are expected to reach peak levels between 9pm and 10pm this evening. Low lying areas of the Tees Valley from Middleton St George to the Tees Barrage could be impacted.

The Environment Agency says it is not expecting to have to close the Yarm flood gates but will monitor water levels closely.
