Farmer Christmas, an annual event in the Gaunless Valley and Woodland area of County Durham, has its "biggest year yet", with farmers and fundraisers reaching over 400 children, dropping off presents ahead of Christmas.

The theme - Shine a Light into the Dark - saw farmers deck their tractors with lights and festive decorations, before driving from Tilesheds Farm to Edge Hotel, in Woodland.

The fleet of festive tractors passed though Copley, Butterknowle, Southside and Hamsterley during their circuit, bringing Christmas cheer to onlookers lining the village streets.

This is the event's third year, and is organised by Becky and Simon Land, from Woodland, in memory of their cousin, Michael Tooley.

Initially, Farmer Christmas was organised as a way to  raise a bit of money for Macmillan, in thanks of the nurses who cared for Michael as he battled cancer during the Covid pandemic.

Organiser Becky Land said: "Initially, we first started Farmer Christmas in memory of Michael Tooley, and the Macmillan nurses who looked after him, but every year since them it has just got bigger and bigger.

"It's out third year doing it now, and the effort that everyone puts in it always fantastic.

"We've been overwhelmed with support this year, especially from sponsors. It's really really humbling - everything that small, local businesses from the village have done for us.

"It's difficult to take it all in when you're running around doing everything and getting people places, but when I get to look back, I am always so grateful.

"The Edge Hill hotel has been fantastic too - that was our end point, but they also provided so much support, and sponsored us as a business."

Bucket collections were held along the route, collecting cash for good causes, with it going towards Hamsterley, Butterknowle, Woodland and Evergreen schools.
