Following the devastating events of Covid, in 2021 Durham’s big meet for the Miners Gala had to be cancelled: a further consequence of lockdown. This was upsetting news for the Miners Association since the Gala is something that has been made tradition for years. However, hope was not lost as even small places, like the Quaking Houses village hall, came together to carry out the tradition.

The village hall unveiled the Miners banner as well as other banners including their first ever South Moor banner. Here, they introduced funding for a mini Gala, encouraging youth groups and schools to get involved for this great cause by allowing them to design and decorate their own decorations.

People who were able to organise this cause made sure to include different ornaments, heritages, displays and even acquired a brass band to play just like in the rallies. All of this work was free of price, a sign that they were willing to do anything to show their show their appreciation to the miners with nothing expected in return.

This was an important day to show our respect for the miners and hold out hope for those deeply affected by Covid who enjoy celebrating the cause. By showcasing that even in smaller areas people have come together for great cause to tackle other problems, the village hall was able to show that people are still looking out for normality and respect for what has always been.
