Five people have been fined in court after failing to comply with community protection notices requiring them to remove waste from their gardens and yards. 

Their cases were heard at Peterlee Magistrates' Court, where brought under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

Magistrates were told they failed to follow the notices issued by Durham County Council.

Here are the five that were in court over the last month and have been fined for failing to follow waste notices for their gardens and yards in County Durham:

  • Saphire Charlesworth, of East Street, Grange Villa has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste in their garden. They now have a total of £839 in fines and costs to pay.
  • Chelsea Cerise Hanlon, of Joseph Street, Stanley has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste and dog faeces in their garden. They now have a total of £764 in fines and costs to pay.
  • Alan John Talbot, of Lenin Terrace, Stanley has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste in their garden. They now have a total of £698 in fines and costs to pay.
  • Robert John Burnett, of School Terrace, South Moor has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste in their garden. They now have a total of £839 in fines and costs to pay.
  • Leoni Jade Bell, of Balmoral Drive, Catchgate has been prosecuted for failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice in relation to waste in their garden. They now have a total of £764 in fines and costs to pay.

A spokesperson for Durham County Council said: "Our aim is always to work with residents when we have reports of waste in gardens however sometimes, residents refuse to co-operate which then leads us to prepare casefiles for the courts.
