Spooky season is well underway in one North East town which has become host to some ghoulish ghosts and creepy monsters this week in the lead up to Halloween.

Middlesbrough will until October 29 be known as 'MonsterBoro' as inflatable monsters take over on the roof of the Cleveland Shopping Centre and Captain Cook Square.

With names such as Octoplasm, Goofs and Howlers the creepy crawlies are visible at street level from Corporation Road, Grange Road and Gilkes Street.

An extra surprise monster named Eye Scream has even been placed inside the Cleveland Centre offering visitors the perfect chance to grab an extra spooky selfie.

The air-filled monsters are from Bristol-based production company Designs in Air, and have already appeared in other cities in the UK as well as at the London 2012 Olympics before coming to take over Middlesbrough.

Shaun Rhodes, Head Of Marketing for Cleveland Centre & Captain Cook Square said: "We are thrilled to be bringing this global phenomenon to Middlesbrough for some Pre Halloween fun.

"With both Cleveland Centre and Captain Cook Square coming together we are able to drive footfall In new and exciting ways not only to support traditional shopping but increasingly to promote the town as a leisure and social destination.

"With a whole host of new dining and leisure operators launching at Captain Cook Square in 2024, we look forward to this being the first of many new experiences, attractions, events and installations coming to Middlesbrough town centre in the years ahead."

The monsters will be able to view at all times, and will be lit up in the dark.

Organisers have also said that due to Storm Babet, one monster which was due to appear on the roof of Captain Cook Square had to be relocated at the eleventh hour.

The monster, which has "epic tentacles" is now visible from Corporation Road high up on the roof of the Cleveland Centre.
