The show was back on in a Teesside market town today (Saturday October 21) as the worst Storm Babet could offer appeared to be officially over, as the skies brightened.

In the wake of the onset of the storm, amid yellow and amber rain warnings, the decision was ‘reluctantly’ taken to cancel Friday’s second night of the fair, due to public safety concerns.

But Stockton Borough Council stated that organisers hoped the three decade-old annual event could be staged on Saturday, with forecasted improved conditions.

The Showmen’s Guild, whose members had mounted rides and other amusements down the town’s High Street, agreed with the decision due to the extreme weather forecast.

As the amber and yellow weather warnings were only in place until 1pm today (Saturday October 21), to be followed by an expected improvement in conditions, the all clear was given for the fair’s final day to proceed as planned.

The guild stated: “We will continue to monitor the weather closely.

“We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable day and look forward to welcoming you all.”

As the flood waters of the nearby River Tees subsided and the sun emerged, the show was back on for a grand finale, enjoyed by townsfolk and visitors alike.
