Motorists are once again being bitten by rising fuel prices across the region.

Prices at the pumps have continued to rise with the cost of refuelling now at the highest point since December 2022.

The price of a litre of petrol went up 4.5p a litre last month with the cost of diesel rocketing by more than 8p a litre on average on the back of rising oil production cuts which have driven up prices, the RAC said.

On Wednesday (October 18) it was announced inflation held at 6.7% in September despite some analysts predicting it would dip to 6.6%.

Food and drink prices eased over the month but overall inflation was offset by high costs at the pumps for motorists.

The average cost of a litre of unleaded is currently 155.75p, according to the RAC, while the average price of a litre of diesel stands at 162.37p. The motoring organisation says prices should fall soon.

RAC fuel expert Simon Williams said earlier this month: “Drivers are sadly really starting to suffer again at the pumps with September seeing another 8p a litre added to the average price of diesel which comes hot on the tail of a similar increase in August.

“Petrol has also gone up 11p since the beginning of August so there’s little respite whichever fuel drivers use.

“Our analysis of RAC Fuel Watch wholesale and retail data shows that petrol is currently overpriced by around 7p a litre, although the price of diesel is likely to go up further still in the coming weeks.”
