On the very week that Neighbours returned to our TV screens, it seems rather appropriate that Natalie Imbruglia, one of the big stars of that show arrived in Durham to play as part of the Live At The Cathedral series of events.
There are few settings quite as spectacular as this. The finest example of Norman architecture in the world and designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO, Durham Cathedral made for a stunning backdrop to a live show.
Natalie Imbruglia was clearly in awe of the beautiful architecture and wonderful acoustics as she walked onto the stage before a sold-out audience to the upbeat ‘What It Feels Like’ from her latest album ‘Firebird’ following up with a soaring ‘Shiver’.

Having played on the festival circuit over the summer, Imbruglia adapted her set to suit the historical surroundings meaning a beautiful, touching rendition of ‘Firebird’ and the introspective ‘Dive To The Deep’ really stood out, enhanced by atmospheric low lighting that created dancing shadows across the stone pillars of the cathedral to stunning effect.
Imbruglia`s voice was in fine form too and backed by an impressive band ‘Pigeons and Crumbs’, ‘Wishing You Were Here’ and the smouldering Jazzy ‘Leave Me Alone’ all from her debut album ‘Left Of Middle’, came to life as she ensured the crowd to all three sides felt part of the show.
Of course, the big hits ‘Torn’ and ‘Big Mistake’ had the crowd up on their feet singing along to every word bringing an end to a great evening in the best possible way in the world`s most beautiful building.
