A person has been hit by a train on the East Coast Main Line, which has led to a temporary closure of the route between Northallerton and York. 

The tragic incident was confirmed at 11.50am, when LNER tweeted out about a person being struck by a train - saying that delays on the main line could be possible between London and Edinburgh. 

LNER's tweet read: "Due to a person being hit by a train between Northallerton and York, services are subject to delays when passing in the surrounding area."

As a result of the tragic incident, the 12.40 Newcastle to Edinburgh due 14.15, and  12.32 York to London Kings Cross due 14.39 have been added to the timetable.
