A kitten had a lucky escape at its homing centre after firefighters were forced to cut it out of a tight space using a saw.

Firefighters from Newcastle's Central Community Fire Station were on hand to cut the animal free after it had become wedged at Westgate Ark Cat Homing Centre.

The animal rehoming centre had called the emergency services in a panic after the young kitten became trapped at Mill Lane Industrial Estate in Newcastle.

Thankfully, the heroic fire crew were able to get across and help free the trapped feline.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Our crews had to cut the kitten free using a saw and the whole ordeal had frightened the little guy so they made sure to give him some oxygen before leaving him in the care of Westgate Ark Cat Homing Centre.

"We will always be there to help even those with the littlest paws.

"It avoided a cat-astrophre."
