The North East witnessed a whole raft of high-profile events at the weekend, with the likes of the BBC Proms taking place at the Sage Gateshead, Kubix Festival in Sunderland, Pride in Newcastle and the South Tyneside Festival at Bents Park.
And whilst mother nature may not have got the memo regarding the summer weather, a resilient South Shields crowd turned up in their droves to witness the festival’s diverse programme of entertainment featuring headliners Bjorn Again.
Just one week prior, the second instalment of the four-weekend-long event, featuring Jason Donovan had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. And Sunday’s event came close to following a similar fate but was saved by an eleventh-hour inspection early in the morning. As the old saying goes, the show must go on, and that was certainly the sentiment this time around.
Armed with their ponchos, wellies, umbrellas and deck chairs, the hardy Bents Park audience enjoyed performances from the likes of Drum Young, Shelley Stevens, and soulful cover band Discography. Each of these delivered uplifting sets to get the crowd dancing irrespective of the weather conditions.
Later in the day, as the rain began to subside it was the turn of Bjorn Again to round out the proceedings. With a set full of ABBA classics in their repertoire, and retro stage costumes, the band looked and sounded the part. It is no surprise that the group are internationally famous and endorsed by ABBA themselves.
This year’s summer season at Bent’s Park concludes on Sunday 30th of July with headliners Boyzlife. For ticket information and further details, please visit: www.southtynesidefestival.co.uk
