Three bank branches across the region will close in the next week, as 17 are due to shut this year.

Banks are continuing to push forward with the move to online banking, with more branches set to pull down the shutters.

The number of people using in-person services has been falling for years as more people switch to digital.

Three branches are set to close in the space of eight days within the next week, as SEVENTEEN close in the North East this year, leaving thousands of customers without a branch nearby.

One Halifax site and two Barclays locations will close next week.

Halifax, Chester-le-Street – April 19

Halifax will close its Chester-le-Street branch at 58 Front Street on Wednesday (April 19).

The banking giant said it carried out a “thorough review” before making the decision. It said that only 166 customers regularly used the branch in the 12 months to July last year.

Barclays, Stanhope – April 21

Barclays announced in January that its Stanhope branch will shut for good on Friday (April 21).

Speaking to The Northern Echo at the time Cllr John Shuttleworth described the decision as “very disappointing”, adding: “A lot of the local population here is over 60 and don’t have mobile banking or access to online.”

Figures from Barclays show that only 22 customers the branch regularly as their only method of banking.

Barclays, Bedale – April 26

Bedale will lose its last bank branch on Wednesday next week (April 26) as Barclays shuts shop.

It will be joined by the branch in Leyburn next month.

In March the Echo’s sister paper the Darlington & Stockton Times reported that Barclays was in talks over a new site in the town – but users won’t be able to take out cash.

  • Gosforth, Newcastle – NE3 1HE – closing July 18
  • South Shields, South Tyneside – NE33 1NW – closing June 14
  • Whitley Bay, North Tyneside – NE26 2SW – closing May 2
  • Whitby, North Yorkshire – YO21 1BD – closing May 16
