Review: Garrett Millerick at Newcastle's The Stand

Seasoned comedian Garrett Millerick brought his first ever national tour to Newcastle’s The Stand Comedy Club last week (March 25).

Promising sensible answers to stupid questions as the world's angriest optimist, the show - titled ‘Just trying to help’ - drifted from discussions of Twitter to Greta Thunberg as he stated, “I just want to bring you the truth.”

Running onto the stage, he burst in with a crash of energy to The Stand’s dimly lit pink basement, with such excitable energy promising an unforgettable set.

Finally delivering a show he would have done just before lockdown three years ago, he was the first to admit “It’s nice to see people out at 3 o’clock just drinking.”

Millerick’s set was truly a quest to put the world to rights in a post-pandemic world, trivialising the state of us during lockdown and how it’s been “a difficult couple of years”.

Whilst I at first felt outnumbered as one of the few members of the younger generation, Millerick’s set was truly a perfect mix of jokes for young and old, including his property-based dig at the fictional “baby boomer b****** island”.

Often, I found myself laughing more in the more understated moments of the show, such as his extended rant about Twitter that proceeded to end with “So, if you’d like to follow me on Twitter…”

Then came the resounding applause.

Even with setbacks, Millerick shined in his unexpected and downplayed moments. One memorable encounter was when a very impolite woman in the front row kept distracting him.

Millerick, without missing a beat, told them to “shut up” and carried on with the show, joking that he was lucky they showed up as he didn’t book a support act.

This hilarity continued at the end of the show during his bows, gesturing over to the now rather embarrassed woman who didn’t know whether to stand up and bow herself or endlessly wish the ground would swallow her whole.

If you want to see an hour of the world truly set straight, I’d really recommend a trip to see Garrett on his continuing national tour.
