Plans to overhaul an empty Toys R Us store on a North East shopping park could see a new tenant move in.

The high street giants' Teesside Park has sat empty for over five years, but, according to new plans, the retail park's owner has revealed it wants to 'significantly improve' the 'tired and outdated' store, ready for a new tenant moving in.

It has lodged a planning application for 'external alterations' to the building and minor works to the 380-space car park at the site.

British Land has yet to confirm who might be moving in, but the 'standalone warehouse' could soon be about to see some activity if Stockton Council passes the latest plans.

The application states: "Unit 24 is currently vacant having previously been occupied by Toys R Us. The proposed works are required in order to facilitate the reoccupation of the vacant unit by a new tenant.

"The proposed external alterations aim to significantly improve the visual appearance of the elevations of Unit 24, which are currently tired and outdated."

The statement adds: "The alterations use high-quality materials and have been designed to respect the existing surrounding retail terraces," the statement says.

This year, Teesside Park is welcoming more big names including fashion brand Tessuti, while work is also getting underway on Primark's new store.
