A burning for sale' sign caught early by the house owner averted tragedy last night.
The vandals of the property on Woodham Way in Newton Aycliffe are now being sought by police, who say they need the help of witnesses.
PC Andrew Cook said the incident took place at 10.30pm: "Fortunately the householder acted quickly to put the fire out but there was potential for serious damage to be caused."
Those who saw anything should call PC Cook at Newton Aycliffe police station on 0845-60-60-365 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
