A PUB featuring in a high-profile television advertisement for a double glazing company does not have planning permission for the alterations,it has emerged.

In the advert, Everest tells of the solar panels it has installed at the Tan Hill Inn, in the Yorkshire Dales, the UK's highest pub, at 1,732ft above sea level.

But the panels may now have to be removed because the pub did not have consent to install them.

Everest made an advert at the windswept pub more than 20 years ago, showing presenter Ted Moult with a feather floating gently to the floor next to a draught-free window.

The latest advert shows presenter Craig Doyle stepping into the pub, near Reeth, in Swaledale, as workers complete the improvements, aimed at making the pub more environmentally friendly.

The pub will now have to seek retrospective planning consent from Richmondshire District Council.

Landlady Tracy Daly said: "We thought all the paperwork would have been sorted out before Everest came in to do the work.

"It is unbelievable. I thought the council would have wanted us to do our bit for the climate, but it seems they are more interested in filling out the paperwork."

Mrs Daly, 42, said the pub received no money to be featured in the advert, but received about £90,000-worth of equipment free.

She said: "We thought the advert would be great publicity and we could get the improvements done at no cost to ourselves.

"We made sure the panels were put on the back of the building so they would not be intrusive.

They came in February and spent five days here doing the work.

"It would be a shame if the panels do have to come down, I have been really impressed with the results so far."

A council spokesman said: "The rules that apply to installations like this are not simple, but it is our job to make sure they are followed.

We hope to speak to the owners again and help them complete the paperwork."

Homeowners do not need permission to install alternative energy technologies, such as solar panels, but the owners of commercial properties do.

A spokesman for Everest said: "Everest and the Tan Hill Inn had a number of discussions with the planning authorities to discuss the installation of solar panels at the inn. The appropriate documentation to seek formal permission was not lodged with the council. This oversight has now been corrected."
