A FORMER music teacher has written a book on the history of brass bands in the North- East.

Musician and conductor Dennis Taylor's book, The Heritage of the North East Brass Band Movement, is aimed at keeping memories of the tradition alive.

Mr Taylor, 82, from Silksworth, Sunderland, is the only brass bandsman to hold a Master of Music degree from Durham University.

He said: "Brass bands hold an important place in the British music culture.

"Some writers have characterised the bands as one of the great achievements of the working class, and my book is a tribute to that movement."

Brass bands in the North- East can be traced from the industrial revolution in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

A concert featuring Stanhope Brass Band, will be held to mark the launch of the book, at Bethany Christian Centre, Hetton Road, Houghton-le-Spring, from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and funds go to Brass Band Aid.

Tickets are available from the Bethany office on 0191-512- 1234 or from Mr Taylor on 0191-528-4365. The book costs £10 and can also be ordered from Mr Taylor.
