GARDENERS are being invited to show off their achievements in this year's Beautiful Durham competition.

Entries are being taken for the annual contest, which is in its 23rd year.

There is a broad range of categories for gardeners, allotment holders and groups, including best kept residential area, floral containers, front garden, business premises and environmental project.

Jeff Barton, event co-ordinator, said: "The competition is all about brightening up our villages and city, which has the knock-on effect of creating a better and more attractive local environment.

"Over the years, Durham City's residents have done the area proud with some fantastic displays and well-deserved winners.

"Everyone who enters is a winner, as there's no doubt that the hard work and effort of entrants has helped the city to achieve success in both the Northumbria in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions."

The competition is free to enter and open to all in the Durham City district. Judging will take place on July 10 and 11. The winners receive a trophy, certificate and gift vouchers.

The closing date for entries is Friday, July 4.
