PEOPLE are being given a chance to help with conservation and learn more about one of the region's key waterways.
The Great North Forest is to launch a year-long series of green exercises around the River Team.
The river, once one of Britain's most polluted, has been improved by conservation work.
Water quality is improving and wildlife is returning to the area.
The new project, funded through a £35,000 grant from the Environment Agency, will organise eight events, including walks, talks and tree planting.
Donna Murphy, from Great North Forest, said: "This project is about getting people to re-connect with the River Team, giving them the chance to make a positive impact on its future and the landscape nearby."
The River Team begins near Stanley, flows past Beamish and through Gateshead's Team Valley trading estate. Its history is shaped by coal mining, shipbuilding and steel.
A two-hour circular walk will be held on Thursday, June 26.
Walkers will leave the Angel of the North at 6pm. A quiz is included.
