Norton's fortunes took another turn for the better when Jonathan Rickard hit a maiden century against Gateshead Fell in the Northern Rock North East Premier League.

The youngster opened the innings to reach an unbeaten 103 out of their winning total of 182-3.

The Fell, without a win in five, would have been isolated at the bottom if Newcastle weren't suffering poor results as well. They plunged to their fifth defeat at the hands of Tynemouth, who consolidated their position at the other end of the table. Aussie Grant Lindsay hit a magical 118 and Ian Purdy was unlucky to miss out on another century by just six runs as they passed the 300 mark.

Second-placed Tynemouth continue to chase mighty South Northumberland who won handsomely again after Adam Cragg (85) and Jimmy Miller (50 not out) shared a stand of 102 from just 98 balls at Blaydon who had no answer to the bowling of Stephen Humble (7-28). Durham Academy, Sunderland and South Shields were the day's other winners.
