YOUNGSTERS are to trek along the Cleveland Way on a fact-finding mission.

Pupils from nine primary schools in the region are to walk a short stretch of the trail over the coming weeks, in a project to increase their awareness of the 109-mile trail as it passes through the North York Moors National Park.

Staff from the park authority will walk with the children to point out key features.

There will also be games to teach the children about the geology, cultural and social history of the area and how the land is managed.

The schools involved include Saltburn Primary School.

The sessions will take place along the route between June 9 and June 26.

The project is funded by Natural England, Redcar and Cleveland and Scarborough borough councils.

Malcolm Hodgson, the national trails officer for the Cleveland Way, said: "I'm sure the children involved will enjoy finding out more about their stretch of the Cleveland Way."

After the walk, the pupils will create artwork and poems about the trail to go on show at the park's Danby Visitor Centre, from July 28 to August 3.
