A GUNMAN who terrified patients at a North-East hospital was overcome by staff until the arrival of firearms officers.

Police were called to the accident and emergency department at Sunderland Royal Hospital at 5.30pm on Wednesday, after reports of a man threatening to harm himself. It is understood he fired an airgun at the wall before being held by hospital staff.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said: "City Hospitals is relieved that no other patients or any members of our staff were injured as a result of this incident.

"Clinicians working in A&E acted quickly to defuse a potentially serious situation and ensure that patient safety and car was not compromised."

Police yesterday confirmed that a 50-year-old Sunderland man had been arrested on firearms offences and has been bailed pending further inquiries.
