A MAN who attacked a social club customer with a broken bottle has been jailed.

Shaun Campell, 28, lashed out at John Burns' arm during at assault outside the Neon Social Club in Jarrow, South Tyneside, on August 4 last year.

As a result Mr Burns had a serious injury to his elbow and a black eye.

Prosecutor Tim Parkin told Newcastle Crown Court today: "Mr Burns went towards the car park exit where the incident happened.

"His memory of it is something was said to him which he could not hear, he was then within a few feet of the defendant who struck him to the side of his head.

"He was aware of glass breaking.

"He went to the ground and became aware of blood dripping from his hand.

"While he was on the ground he was kicked to the left shoulder."

The court heard as a result of his ordeal Mr Burns, 46, is still suffering both mentally and physically.

Campbell, of Inverness Road, Jarrow, admitted unlawful wounding.

He accepted using the broken bottle on Burns' upper arm but said the more serious injury to the victim's elbow resulted from him falling during the attack.

The court heard there had been an incident between the two men the previous day.

Defence barrister Bob Spragg said Campbell, who has a string of previous convictions for violence, has a serious drink problem which he is now determined to overcome and has taken positive steps to turn his life around.

Judge Beatrice Bolton sentenced Campbell to 14 months behind bars.

The judge said: "I cannot possibly pass a sentence that will result in a non-custodial penalty."
