AN Indian restaurant suffered minor damage after a loft fire last night.

Firefighters were called to Saffron, in Market Place, Leyburn, at about 7.55pm.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was started by equipment being left unattended by contractors in the restaurant.

She said: "There was minimal damage to some boarding in the loft.

"The fire was started by a heat lamp, which had been left on by the builders.

"It caused radiated heat to ignite dust in the loft, which is being renovated."

The spokeswoman said no smoke alarms were fitted in the two-storey restaurant, and the fire was spotted by a restaurant worker, who raised the alarm.

Crews from Leyburn and Richmond attended the incident.

The cause of the fire has been logged as accidental.
