YOUNGSTERS in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, could soon be enjoying new play facilities thanks to a £50,000 Big Lottery grant.

The Avenue play area is to be given a facelift after Middlesbrough Council was given funding to improve three playgrounds.

A meeting will be held next month to explain to people what changes are to take place.

At the moment there are swings, a climbing frame and a slide. But in recent years, the equipment has become dated and rundown. The final design for the play area is yet to be finalised.

Councillor Peter Sanderson is backing the move to give children a better place to play.

He said: "The money is coming from a grant, which was applied for by Middlesbrough Council.

The area in Nunthorpe was chosen because the facilities are in need of improvement and it is a popular place with kids."

Nunthorpe Community Council, Nunthorpe Parish Council and Middlesbrough Council are working together to decide what is needed for the area.

Coun Sanderson said: "I am not sure at the moment what facilities are going to put there, but they will replace the stuff that is wooden at the moment.

"The new equipment will exceed the minimum standard required.

"Hopefully, the play facilities will get lots of use as the site is near the shops and flats."

It is hoped the work will be completed by September.

One person who lives nearby said: "The facilities are muchneeded.

That play area is quite well used so any sort of new facilities would be welcomed."

A spokesman for Middlesbrough Council said: "The council has got funding for three play areas from the Big Lottery, including The Avenue play area."

The public meeting to discuss plans for the site will take place in The Avenue School hall, on June 3, at 6.30pm.

People will be able to have their say and designs for the play area will be on display.
