A MAN has been arrested after firing an air powered pellet gun in a hospital accident and emergency department.

Police were called to Sunderland Royal Hospital at 5.30pm tonight to reports that a man was threatening to harm himself. He then fired the weapon at a wall.

Hospital staff detained him until Northumbria Police firearms officers arrived.

A police spokeswoman said a 50-year-old Sunderland man was arrested in connection with firearms offences.

No-one was injured.
