PARENTS of children battling drug problems are being urged to take advantage of a support service.

Hartlepool-based Pins (Parents In Need of Support) provides practical and emotional one-to-one support, education and training to about 250 parents a year who are finding it difficult to come to terms with their children's addictions.

However, it is feared many other people are suffering in silence because they are too embarrassed to come forward.

Pins manager Kay Barron said: "There is too much stigma attached to the reasons why people turn to drugs or alcohol.

"Many parents blame themselves and, sadly, consider it partly or wholly their fault that their children have taken the path of substance misuse.

"Substance misuse can be just as destructive for the family as it can be for the addict, and it is important that they get the support that they need to help themselves and their children to access treatment services.

"We find that parents don't come forward as soon as we would like and we would welcome any parent, even if they just want an informal chat."

The appeal coincides with National Tackling Drugs Week.

Pins is made up of volunteers who have experienced similar situations. They offer home visits, telephone support, parenting skills courses and drug awareness training. Contact Pins on 01429-260110.
