COUNTRYSIDE officers and historians are appealing for people to join them for a leisurely walk.

The free two-hour ramble around Greatham Village, Hartlepool, will be led by heritage and countryside officer Rachel Jackson and Greatham historian, Dorothy Clark.

The walk gets underway at 10am on Friday, from Greatham Community Centre. It is the first in a series of guided walks in a project organised by Tees Forest.

Miss Jackson said: "There is a lot of Second World War history connected with Greatham and, during the walk, Dorothy Clark will talk people through some of the fascinating stories and visit the sites.

"Greatham had an active airfield and many Army camps during the Second World War and was a defensive base to protect key targets such as ICI.

"As part of the project, we are also want to hear from people about their memories and recollections of the Second World War in Hartlepool."
