DETAILS of plans to transform a former bus depot into a 13,000sq ft childrens activity complex in Darlington have been revealed.

Known as Adventure Point, the project is the brainchild of local businesswoman Carolyn Maxey and follows a successful planning decision in the High Court last year.

When it is completed, the centre - situated at Morton Trade Park in Darlington - will employ 25 people and is expected to attract visitors from all over the North-East.

It will feature a 10,000sq ft indoor play area, plus a 3,000sq ft mezzanine and outdoor play area.

It aims to become an attraction for families and will include a mini ten-pin bowling area, go-karting and sports arena with a mini football pitch and basketball court, as well as a quiet chill-out area with plasma television screens and a baby and toddler area.

It will also have five themed party rooms, a rainforest with coconut climbing trees, an overhead play frame, a PC zone with free internet access and a dance studio, as well as water and sand play areas and adventure trails.

It will be the first facility in the area to incorporate all-year-round indoor and outdoor play areas.

Nick Appleyard, of Landteam, the developers who have constructed the trade park, said: "This is a very popular area of town with shoppers and the new facility will not only attract people from around the region but means local people will not have to travel out of Darlington as they will have this facility on their doorstep.

"I look forward to seeing Adventure Point open and as a dad I think it's an excellent idea - I certainly will be using it."

Mrs Maxey, of Hurworth, said: "I wanted to spend more time with my family so retired from my previous business.

"But about 12 months ago I realised I wanted to get back into business and do something that included children. I also wanted something that appealed to young people and adults - and I think this adventure concept will go down very well."
