A MAN who attacked Newcastle United star Joey Barton's personal assistant in his room at a luxury hotel has been detained in a secure hospital indefinitely.

Adrian Hudson lashed out at the male pa with a corksrew when he returned to his room at the plush Jesmond Dene House Hotel in Newcastle on July 18 last year.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how Hudson was waiting inside the room, with a rucksack containing a cut throat razor and a hunting knife, when the 22-year-old walked in.

Hudson then tried to punch the victim, with a corkscrew sticking out from his clenched fist, but the blow missed and no actual injury was caused.

the court heard how Hudson, 23, had a mental illness at the time of the incident, from which he is still suffering.

Judge Beatrice Bolton made a hospital order which means Hudson will be detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.

he will only ever be released if medics and the Home Secretary deem him safe.

Judge Bolton said; "At the Jesmond Dene Hotel he was confronted by a member of the public, the member of the public having gone into his own room and found the defendant there with a rucksack containing weapons.

"The defendant threw a punch at the member of the public with a corkscrew in his hand, clearly using it as a weapon.

"Happily the punch did not connect.

"At the time of committing these offences he was suffering and still suffers chronic enduring mental illness.

"He still harbours beliefs various individuals who have been trying to assist him are getting at him, according to reports he feels they are seeking to poision him or harm him in some way.

"I am clearly of the view a hospital order is necesary in this case."

Hudson, of Dean Road, South Shields, South Tyneside, admitted common assault and three charges of possessing bladed articles.

This included possession of a lock knife at Millbank police station in South Shields that same month.

The hotel, set in its own parkland, has been named as one of the country's most stlish destinations and a favourite of footballers and business people.

The Jesmond Dene Hotel features in the AA's new guest list guide which showcases Uk venues offering luxury accomodation and excellent food.

Midfielder Barton made a £5.8m move to the toon from Manchester City.

The Liverpool-born star's agent Willie McKay confirmed Joey and his assistant had been staying at the hotel but the player was not present when the incident took place.
