A lorry driver had a lucky escape when his cab was turned into a fireball at a Darlington business park.

The fire broke out in the lorry cab on Lingfield Way at around 11.30am on Tuesday, August 30.

Two appliances from the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service were sent to the scene and quickly got the blaze under control.

Michael Lancaster, who saw the incident unfold, said: "It was big, there was a massive bang and at first I thought a window had broken or something then I saw all this black smoke.

"I saw the driver running away with just his jeans on, he wasn't wearing any shoes or top and I think he just managed to escape with his phone."

Luckily the driver managed to escape unharmed and as there was no trailer on the lorry at the time, the fire was confined to the cab.

It is understood that the lorry had travelled from Birmingham to drop off goods at the Amazon warehouse in Darlington.

The fire service is investigating the cause of the blaze.
