Dramatic images of a serious vehicle fire that saw a Vauxhall Astra completely destroyed have been released after emergency services raced to the scene of the serious incident on Monday (August 22) morning.

Firefighters from Cleveland Fire and Rescue Service joined officers from Cleveland Police on the A66 Westbound, near the Hartburn turn-off, at 7.44 am following reports of passers-by seeing a ‘serious’ car fire that had ‘completely destroyed’ the vehicle.

Cleveland Fire Brigade sent a fire engine from Thornaby where a single hose reel and a breathing apparatus were used to tackle the flames and resulting smoke.

It was reported that no injuries were sustained during the incident, and the car was recovered a short while after the fire.

In the aftermath of the blaze, images of the dramatic fire were circulated online – which shows the flames blazing from the vehicle and two people stood at the side of the road.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called on Monday, August 22 at 7.44 am to a single car fire on the A66 (Westbound near the Hartburn turn off). One fire engine from Thornaby was in attendance.

"The car was 100% destroyed by fire. One hose reel and one breathing apparatus were used. We left the scene at 08.22 and the police were still in attendance at that time."

A Cleveland Police spokesperson added: "There was a report of a Vauxhall Astra on fire around 7.55 am this morning on the A66. There were no injuries, and the vehicle will be recovered."

Investigations into how the fire started are currently ongoing.
